Airstreams are known for their luxurious design and comfortable accommodations, but to make the most of your off-grid adventures, you'll need to equip yourself with a few essential items. Getting There Safely: Hitches, Locks, and Leveling Equipment
Before you can embark on your Airstream adventure, you'll need to ensure you have the proper hitches and locks to tow your trailer securely. A weight-distribution hitch will help distribute the weight of your trailer evenly across your tow vehicle's axles, improving handling and stability. Invest in high-quality trailer locks to deter theft and give you peace of mind while you're away from your campsite.
Once you've arrived at your destination, a leveling system will be essential for ensuring your Airstream trailer is stable and comfortable. There are many different leveling systems available, from simple wheel chocks to more elaborate designs like the Anderson leveling blocks. Purchasing the right leveling system will make your time in the trailer much better!
Keeping an Eye on the Road: Tire Monitors and Trip Planning Tools
Safety should always be your top priority when traveling with a trailer. A tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) will help you keep an eye on your tire pressure and alert you to any potential problems. Regularly checking your tire pressure is essential for preventing blowouts, which can damage your trailer and cause serious accidents. You will also want to carry your own air compressor, as finding a working air source along your route can be difficult. Even then, one that is accessible to your rig. If you have a duel axel trailer, be sure to carry a tire ramp that will allow changing a tire without a jack (that could damage the underside of your Airstream.
In addition to a TPMS, trip planning tools can help you chart your course and avoid any potential hazards. There are many different trip planning apps and websites available, so do your research and find one that suits your needs. We find that RV Trip Wizard is the best for us. With careful planning, you can ensure your Airstream adventure is a safe and enjoyable experience.
Power Up Your Adventures: Electrical Essentials
No matter where your travels take you, you'll likely want to have access to electricity. If you're planning on boondocking (camping off-grid), you'll need a generator to power your trailer's appliances. A soft start will allow you to power your air conditioner on lower wattage generators or even a 20A residential outlet. In addition to a generator, you'll also need a surge protector to safeguard your Airstream's electrical system from power surges. A variety of adapter cords will also be helpful for connecting your trailer to different electrical outlets.
Ensuring Fresh Water: Water Essentials
Having access to clean water is essential for any camping trip. You'll need a good quality water hose to fill your Airstream's fresh water tank, this is our recommendation. A water filter can help remove impurities from your water supply, while water treatment tablets can further purify your water for drinking and cooking. While it’s a bit expensive, we don’t travel without the BluTech filtration system below.

Designed specifically for RVs, it’s perfect for small Airstream outside storage bays. The solution Janet & I have been looking for, and now it’s here! Keep in mind you will need two Fresh hoses as this is an inline filter.
Disposing of Waste: Sewer Essentials
Another essential item for your Airstream trailer is a sewer hose. I use the Rhino sewer hose and have great luck with it lasting for years. Airstreams generally come with a cheap sewer hose, and when it comes to waste water, you want something that won’t fail. Ask me how I know! You'll also need sewer supports to prevent your hose from kinking or breaking.
Comfort is Key: Camping Chairs
Finally, don't forget to pack some comfortable camping chairs! Relaxing around a campfire or enjoying the view is much more enjoyable when you have a comfortable place to sit. Choose chairs that are easy to fold up and store, and that are made from durable materials that can withstand the elements.
