Can You Run an RV Air Conditioner From a Lithium Battery Bank? Here’s the Real Answer.
Our System Allows 10+ Hours A/C Run Time
With a Victron 3000W Multiplus II and 920ah of EPOCH battreries, we can run one of our Gree A/C units for up to 10 hours or both units for over 4 hours. An absolute fantastic upgrade to our Airstream Globetrotter 27FTB.
Running an RV air conditioner from a lithium battery bank used to be something people only attempted on YouTube, boondocking forums, or in very specific high-end off-grid builds. But today? It’s absolutely possible, extremely reliable, and increasingly common — as long as the system is sized and designed correctly.
At Pagosa Supply Co, we install lithium systems every week for RVers who want true off-grid freedom. And one of the biggest questions we hear is:
“Can I run my A/C from lithium batteries?”
Short answer: Yes.
Real answer: Yes — if the entire system is built to support it.
This guide breaks down exactly what you need, how long you can expect your A/C to run, the best batteries and inverters for the job, and how to avoid the most expensive mistakes we see in DIY installs.
Let’s dive in.
Why Running RV A/C From Lithium Is Now Possible
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries changed everything. Compared to lead-acid, they:
Deliver steady voltage under heavy load
Provide far higher usable energy
Recharge quickly from solar, alternator, or shore power
Handle high discharge currents without sagging
In simple terms:
Lithium can give your inverter the surge power and stability needed to run a compressor-driven air conditioner.
But you still need the right supporting components.
The Three Things You MUST Have to Run A/C on Lithium
Running a roof A/C isn’t just about throwing in a big battery. You need a well-balanced system:
1. A 3,000W inverter with strong surge capability
This is the heart of the system. A typical 13.5k–15k BTU A/C unit requires:
1,200–1,700 running watts
2,000–3,000 surge watts during compressor startup
Less surge if you install a Soft Start (highly recommended)
The two best inverters for A/C builds:
(Xantrex 3000W fits seamlessly into pre 2025 Leisure Travel Vans with 2000W Xantrex)
Victron is the better choice and less expensive as well. It’s our choice for anything other than a Leisure Travel Van.
Victron MultiPlus II 3000W
Legendary surge performance
PowerAssist (helps when shore power is weak)
Rich ecosystem & monitoring
One of the most reliable RV inverter/chargers available
Xantrex Freedom XC PRO 3000
True sine wave output
Strong startup capability
Perfect size/layout for Leisure Travel Vans
Lithium-optimized charging
If your inverter doesn’t have the surge power, the whole system fails.
2. A lithium battery bank sized for A/C loads
Here’s the truth most RVers don’t hear:
A/C runtime is directly tied to battery capacity and battery discharge rating — not just inverter size.
A solid rule of thumb:
Minimum recommended battery capacity for A/C:
300Ah+ at 12V
More = longer runtime.
You can absolutely run an A/C on a 300Ah system — just don’t expect all-day A/C without alternator or solar charging.
Important:
Epoch Essentials Series require two batteries minimum to run a 3kW inverter due to BMS limits. If you want to run one 300ah EPOCH, the Pro Series is the one to get.
3. Proper wiring, safety components & configuration
Underrated, but critical:
Correct cable gauge (huge factor in preventing voltage drop)
Proper fusing/breaker protection
Short DC cable runs
Lithium charging profiles set correctly
Skipping these steps leads to:
Inverter fault codes
Overtemp shutdown
BMS cutoffs
Short runtimes
Potential safety hazards
This is why so many people choose to have installs done professionally — the configuration matters just as much as the components.
How Long Will an RV A/C Run on Lithium?
This depends on:
Battery size
Inverter load
Whether a Soft Start is installed
Ambient temperature
Duty cycle of the A/C
Here is an easy to use calculator to find out how much battery you need for expected run times. Typical factory A/Cs like Dometic, GE, Coleman run 1700W Spike, 1450W continuous. Our GREE A/C that we swapped our Dometics for on our Airstream use only 900W continous, allowing 10+ hours on our 920Ah of Epoch batteries.
| Appliance | Avg Watts | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LED Interior Lights (each) | 5 – 20 W | |
| 12V Compressor Fridge | 60 – 120 W | ~40 % duty cycle |
| Residential Fridge (inverter) | 150 – 400 W | |
| Roof A/C 13.5k BTU | 1,300 – 1,700 W | ~2,500 W startup |
| Roof A/C 15k BTU | 1,500 – 2,000 W | ~3,000 W startup |
| Microwave | 800 – 1,200 W | Short bursts |
| Coffee Maker | 900 – 1,500 W | |
| Induction Cooktop (1 burner) | 1,200 – 1,800 W | |
| CPAP Machine | 30 – 60 W | Humidifier ≈ doubles |
| Starlink Standard Dish | 50 – 100 W | 75 W typical |
| Starlink Mini | 25 – 40 W | |
| Laptop Charging | 45 – 100 W | |
| LED TV 43–55″ | 60 – 120 W | |
| Inverter Idle Draw | 10 – 30 W | Always on |
What If You Don’t Want to Run A/C From Batteries?
Not everyone wants off-grid A/C — and that’s totally fine.
If your A/C will stay on generator or shore power, a 2,000W inverter is perfect for everyday RV life:
Microwave
Outlets
Charging devices
Coffee maker
TV, Wi-Fi, and electronics
Induction cookware
Residential fridge
Just make sure the charger is set to the correct lithium profile.
